The Seven Year Itch

Directed by Claudia Budris
Stage Manager - Samantha Silver

Like many other Manhattan husbands, Richard Sherman sends his wife and child to the country for the summer, while he stays behind to revel in temporary bachelorhood. But his overactive, over-vivid imagination goes into overdrive when a delightfully unconventional, voluptuous young model moves in upstairs. Does Richard scratch that seven year itch? Don’t miss the fun.

Cast of Characters

Richard Sherman (male, 30s-40s) A middle-manger at a publishing company, who’s prone to re-writing his own story; filled with pent-up longings for women he wishes he’s done something more with. Must have a lot of energy and be able to hold the stage on his own.

The Girl (female, 20s) Richard’s new upstairs neighbor, an actress/model who seems to encourage his delusions. She plays two romantically comic roles: 1) herself, a perky, down-to-earth-girl-next-door and 2) Richard’s dream version of her, a seductive temptress. An enigmatic beauty, we never learn her name, but she ignites Richard’s image of the man he might have been. Please, no Marilyn Monroe impressions.

Helen Sherman (female, 30s-40s) By no means unattractive, she’s secure enough to leave her husband alone, but wise enough to keep in touch by phone. Needs to be the confident wife in Richard’s reality and a seductress to Tom Mackenzie in Richard’s imagined sequences.

Tom Mackenzie (male, 30s-40s) A writer acquaintance of Richard and Helen’s. Handsome and glamorous. He seduces Helen in Richard’s imagined sequences. (Role to be doubled with Richard’s Voice: the unseen inquisitor when Richard talks things over with himself).

Dr. Brubaker (late 40s +) A Psychiatrist client from Richard’s publishing company; who’s working on a book about a notorious rapist. Richard turns to him for help about his own irresistible impulses, fearing the worst. Naturally, the worse Richard gets, the more the doctor wants to study him.

Ricky/Janie Sherman (male/female, 7-10) The Sherman’s child who feels terribly sorry for Dad who never has any fun.

Miss Morris (female, 20s) A provocative stenographer at Richard’s office whom he’s sure is constantly on the brink of “giving him the business” (Role to be doubled with The Girl’s Voice: Apart from Richard’s delirious emotions, The Girl is a person in her own right, who doesn’t say everything she thinks, either. Her inner commentary parallels Richard’s as we glimpse her inner thoughts.)

Elaine (female, 40s-50s) An older friend of Helen’s, “a luscious looking dame” whom Richard likes to believe has been trying to get him in the sack for years.

Marie Whatever-Her-Name-Was (female, 20s) A French girl from the U.N. who once tempted Richard into a suitless midnight swim. French accent a must.
