Character Breakdown

Note: The majority of roles in She Kills Monsters represent high school–aged characters. Adults who can portray teen characters onstage are encouraged to audition for these roles. Due to mature themes and concepts explored in this production, auditions are open to performers ages 16 and older. Performers of all ages (16+), from all backgrounds and identities, are welcome and will be considered.

Agnes Evans (mid-late 20s) – A high school teacher.  Pragmatic and cautious, she is struggling to move on after the unexpected death of her sister, which leads her on a journey that challenges her to discover her adventurous and compassionate side and to grapple with loss.

Tilly Evans (16-18) – A high schooler whose untimely death leaves behind only her brave and adventurous D&D character, Tillius the Paladin.  Throughout the show we discover that, even in death she is still just a teenager struggling with her identity and sexuality.

Chuck Biggs (16-18) – A high school student who helps guide Agnes through Dungeons and Dragons through the role of Dungeon Master.  He is passionate, quirky, sincere, and knowledgeable.  His character can best be described as: genuinely dances like no one is watching.

Miles (mid-late 20s) – Agnes’s caring and loving boyfriend.  He has difficulty understanding Agnes’s new behavior, but over the course of the play pushes to learn and support Agnes through her journey with his well-meaning nature, highlighting key themes of love and heart in the play.

Lilith (16-18) – the fierce and loyal Demon Queen and a member of Tilly’s adventuring party.  Outside of the game she is Lily, a student whose connection with Tilly is highlighted by her vulnerability and insecurity about her feelings for Tilly.

Kalliope (16-18) – a skilled and lethal Dark Elf ranger and a member of Tilly’s adventuring party.  Her primary traits are her strength and resilience which lend well to an important hidden truth about the real life high schooler Kelly.

Orcus (16-18) – a lazy and disenfranchised demon who has lost touch with his fearsome persona, opting for snacks and TV.  He serves as the comic touch at many points.  In real life he is Ronnie, a former friend of Tilly’s who often acts as the glue between comedy and tragedy.

Vera/Gabbi (mid 20s/16-18) – Vera is a high school guidance counselor and Agnes’s best friend.  She is the voice of reason and often the pragmatic perspective who grounds Agnes is her journey.  Gabbi is a high school cheerleader and mean girl.  She is relentless and a bully, showing up many times to torment Tilly over her sexuality.  Both roles are played by the same performer.

Narrator/Farrah/Tina (ageless/unknown/16-18) – The narrator is a very Lady Galadirel character who narrates our show to the audience through a mystical presence.  Farrah is a woodland fairy who appears deceptively innocent but is more than capable of breaking your arm if you look at her the wrong way.  Tina is a high school cheerleader and mean girl who bullies Tilly throughout the play about her sexuality.  All three roles are played by the same performer.

Steve (16-18) – A poor hero who comes in many times to help in the adventure, only to meet a quick and unfortunate death.  His comedic presence serves as a representation of the absurd and playful core of Dungeons & Dragons.
