Hey! I Heard You’re Black by New Jersey’s own Alicia Whavers presents a vivid tapestry of stories that capture the nuanced realities of Black life in America. Through an anthology of interconnected monologues and scenes, the play introduces us to Black couples, strangers, neighbors, and co-workers navigating the everyday challenges and joys that shape their identities. At the center is Nella, the unflappable “Holla Hotline” specialist, just trying to do her job while a chorus of voices reveals the unspoken truths of their daily existence.

What began as a single monologue, “Busted Tailight”—first accepted to the Columbus Black Theatre Festival in Ohio—has grown into a full-length play that resonates with humor, honesty, and heart. While the stories may not make national headlines, they shine a powerful light on the subtle, constant experiences that define the lives of Black Americans.

With Alicia Whavers’ sharp ear for dialogue and authentic storytelling, Hey! I Heard You’re Black creates a space for conversation, reflection, and recognition. It’s a celebration of resilience, community, and the everyday stories that demand to be heard.
